Tangier - The New Dubai
Tangier is often referred to as "The White City" due to the sugarcube white buildings that greet visitors arriving by sea through the Straits of Gibraltar. It's this unique location, on the northern African coast where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, which has made it such an important and fascinating place over the centuries.
From the middle ages, Tangier changed hands between the Spanish and Portuguese several times before it was given to England as part of a dowry in 1661. Forced to withdraw from the city, the English destroyed the town and its port and, although rebuilt, Tangier fell into decline for several hundred years.
Its position as the bridge between Europe and Africa saw it once again rise to prominence with the port the focus point - much as it still is today. Millions of passengers and goods flow through Tangier port every year.
Perhaps the most interesting period in Tanger's history came before full sovereignty was restored and the city was reunited with Morocco in 1956. Prior to this, Tangier was an International Zone - which ensured political neutrality and commercial liberty - and also won Tangier a reputation for being the spying and smuggling capital of the world; much spy fiction, From Russia with Love to The Bourne Ultimatum, have had Tanger as a backdrop.
This status attracted numerous oddball millionaires and high-living crooks which, in turn, of course, drew in the artists. Delacroix and Matisse were regular visitors, due to the colours and light, while Jack Kerouac, Tennessee Williams and William S Burroughs were all suitably inspired by Tangier to create seminal literature about it. Even the Rolling Stones couldn't keep away.
A Bridge Between Continents - Tangier
Today, Tanger is once again a thriving, multicultural hub and second only to Casablanca in terms of its industrial importance. Tourism is also becoming extremely important to Tangier's economy; it's a popular destination with foreigners and Moroccans alike. In addition to the traditional draws of the souks in the medina, wonderful restaurants dotted throughout and the cave of Hercules - a few miles from the city, where Hercules is said to have rested before one of his 12 labours - huge foreign investment is making Tangier an even more attractive destination.
The magnificent $2b Tan-Med port project opened in summer 2007 and has already proven so popular that another $2b port is to be added; meanwhile, a renovated tourism infrastructure, a 45,000-seater stadium and expanded business centres are all well underway - the Tangier authorities aiming to convert this beautiful and historic town into an attractive Mediterranean marina destination to rival the glamour of Monte Carlo and Palma; a perfect mix of western luxury with eastern ambience.
In fact, Tanger is currently the favourite to be named the venue for the 2012 World Expo, which will see even more investment pour into the city, given the sheer volume of facilities that such a title guarantees. And with several budget airlines looking to land in Tangier by the end of the year, there'll be no shortage of travellers and holidaymakers heading over to see the results.
Tangier (Tanger) Property
Describing exactly what type of Tangier (Tanger) property is available is nigh-on impossible, due to the sheer extent of investment that is currently rolling into the city, as well as the numerous exciting events that seem to be announced daily. However, the Moroccan authorities have learnt lessons from other countries' blueprints and are strictly following a model of sustainable growth and development for the Tangier (Tanger) property market.
The idea is to not only create a glamorous marina to rival Monte Carlo or Palma, but to also increase Tangier (Tanger) investment in commercial property; in short, Tangier will not just be a place to work or to play, but a place to do both.
Therefore, many of the new Tangier (Tanger) property developments incorporate both these elements. The Tanger City Center project, for example, follows the example of London's Canary Wharf, where a new financial district was created away from the congested, crowded and out-of-date city centre. Tanger City Center will boast 850 apartments, two 4 and 5 star hotels with a capacity of 1000 beds, 10,000m2 of office space, plus shopping and recreational facilities.
Town or Beach? - Tangier
Likewise, the Emblematic Tower - set to be Tangier's tallest building offering spectacular views out over the Mediterranean and Straits of Gibraltar to southern Spain - will comprise of street-level commercial units, two storeys of offices and luxurious two and three-bedroom apartments. All this just minutes from the port and city centre.
